Gary Neville on the ideal midfield signing for Manchester United

Fits the bill

Mourinho is looking for a holding midfielder.

Michael Carrick is an excellent player, but he can’t hold back the sands of time. As Carrick’s remarkable career at Old Trafford enters its final stages, it’s clear that Jose Mourinho is looking for a similar player to screen United’s back-four while keeping the play ticking.

Truth be told, replacing the former West Ham and Spurs player will be incredibly difficult because his intelligence, passing and ability to dictate the pace of a match is superb.

Eric Dier, Tiemoue Bakayoko and countless others have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but Gary Neville reckons that Nemanja Matic is the ideal for for Mourinho’s men.

Speaking with the Manchester Evening  News, the Sky Sports pundit believes that “United need another holding midfield player. Michael Carrick has got one more year but he can’t play every single week so they do need to have that player who can come in and do the same job – and Matic would be able to do that.  Morgan Schneiderlin was let go earlier in the season and Bastian Schweinsteiger didn’t get a game, so you’re talking about there needing to be a replacement for them and ultimately Matic would fit the bill.”

The former Man Utd right-back also believes that Chelsea would be prepared to sell the Serbian, if they have a replacement lined up.

“It’s a strange one for Chelsea to let him go because I thought he was really good for them with Kante. I think they need to strengthen, so I’m not sure why they’re letting him go and they must have a replacement.”

Manchester United fans, what do you reckon? Happy top see Matic sign or is there a better alternative out there?
