If you took a punt on Dustin Johnson to win the Masters, you may need to sit down

Damn you staircase!

Not since Tiger Woods was in full Major-winning charge has there been a sure-fire Masters bet.

Augusta National is just too darn tricky – and the pressure so high – that even the likes of Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth have been trumped.

One man that has a decent record at the Masters, and who won seven of his last 10 tournaments, looked to be the best bet to claim the Green Jacket for the first time. He also happens to be the reigning world No.1 and US Open champion.

On Wednesday morning, Dustin Johnson was favourite to win the US Masters, at 6/1 or lower with the bookies. Today, he is down to 15/2 and those odds are getting longer by the hour.

The American fell down a flight of stairs in his rented accommodation and is, right now, a doubt to tee it up in Thursday’s first round.

David Winkle, Johnson’s agent, commented:

‘At roughly 3:00 pm today, Dustin took a serious fall on a staircase in his Augusta rental home.

‘He landed very hard on his lower back and is now resting, although quite uncomfortably. He has been advised to remain immobile and begin a regimen of anti-inflammatory medication and icing, with the hope of being able to play tomorrow [Thursday].’

While Johnson will be resting up for the next few hours and contemplating a trip through the pain barrier, the golfing and betting world continues to spin.

Spieth is now favourite while McIlroy is now at 7/1, close behind him.
