Sir David Attenborough is now the king of Instagram.

You might not expect the 94-year-old to dominate the social media platform, but since joining Instagram on Thursday he has become the fastest person to get to one million followers.

It took him just over four hours to reach the milestone. The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed that he had beaten the previous recordholder Jennifer Aniston, who took 16 hours to get to a million after posting a photo with Friends co-stars Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry.

Sir David Attenborough’s first post was an IGTV video on his decision to join Instagram.

The video already has over 10 million views.

“I’ve been appearing on radio and television for the past 60 years, but this is my first time on Instagram,” Attenborough explained.

“I’m exploring this new way of communication to me because, as we all know, the world is in trouble.”

“Continents are on fire. Glaciers are melting. Coral reefs are dying. Fish are disappearing from our oceans. The list goes on and on.”

“But we know what to do about it. And that’s why I’m tackling this new way, for me, of communication.”

The caption was written by David Attenborough’s team.

“Saving our planet is now a communications challenge. We know what to do, we just need the will.”

“That’s why we want to share this message on Instagram. Because there is hope and together, we can inspire change. Social media isn’t David’s usual habitat so while he’s recorded messages solely for Instagram, like the one in this post, we’re helping to run this account.”

“As well as sharing the messages he’s recorded especially for this account we’ll also post some exclusive clips and behind the scenes content. Stay tuned.”
