Give it Zizou ’till the end of the season

Real Madrid have appointed Zinedine Zidane as their new manager after Santi Solari was sacked having failed to salvage Real Madrid’s season of despair.

Zidane has signed a contract with Madrid stretching until June 2022.

In their statement online, Real Madrid state: “[we] wish to thank Solari for his work, commitment and the loyalty that he has always displayed towards this club, which is his home.”

Zidane returns to the helm after resigning from the Madrid job at the end of last season having won three consecutive Champions League titles and one LaLiga title in that time. Knowing Cristiano Ronaldo would depart that summer, the Madrid legend saw it as the perfect time to step down, having taken the team as far as he could.

But now, he’s back, for the time being at least, to guide Madrid to the end of the season when the club’s president Florentino Perez will make a decision on how the club progress.

Solari last 32 games in charge at Madrid, after he replaced Julen Lopetegui, whose short-lived reign as manager could not have gone worse.

Zidane represents a safe pair of hands, rather than an iron fist that Florentino Perez was reported to favour in his next appointment. The Frenchman’s return suggests Perez is prioritising the restoration of morale in the dressing room after a dismal run of form which has left them nothing to play for as early as March.
