‘Whizzy Rascal’ drives off with match ball ahead of Super League game

Talk about stealing the show

The Super League match between Warrington Wolves and Castleford Tigers was delayed in hilarious circumstances as the young boy delivering the match ball was unable to control the mini-car he had driven on to the pitch.

The match, which was being shown live on Sky Sports Main Event, saw Warrington host rivals Castleford at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in round two of the season.

A young mascot was tasked with dropping the ball off just before kick-off, but as the players and officials prepared to start the game, the youngster was unable to control his mini BMW and the ball remained tucked under his arm.

He failed to drop off the ball and had to be turned back round by players to have another go at driving to the centre spot. Unfortunately, he sped past referee James Child and Warrington’s Stefan Ratchford for a second time, reaching the side of the pitch from which he’d initially set out.

Players from both sides saw the funny side as they were kept waiting in front of the live television cameras and it amused Warrington coach Daryl Powell in his first home game in charge of the club.

The ball was eventually retrieved from the young boy as he stopped at the sideline, and Warrington went on to win the game 34-10.
