WATCH: Roma knock Barcelona out of Champions League in spectacular fashion

We weren't expecting this

In other news…

Assuming you watch Manchester City vs Liverpool tonight on the off chance that City pulled off an incredible comeback, you might have missed the Roma vs Barcelona game.

Barça won 4-1 in the first leg, a seemingly comfortable result to take to to the Stadio Olympico, but there was always the element of doubt, as Roma had the revered away goal.

Roma took the lead in the 6th minute through Edin Džeko, the ideal start to mount the comeback, but they still needed two more as well as a clean sheet. Captain Danielle De Rossi then scored from the spot in the 58th minute. Suddenly, it was game on, and the hosts needed just one goal to go through, as long as they could keep Messi & co. out.

And they got the goal in the most dramatic of circumstances. In the 82nd minute, Roma had a corner. Barça were tiring. In the words of commentator Peter Drury, ‘every second a minute, every minute an hour’.

The corner was whipped in by Cengiz Ünder to the near post and Konstantinos Manolas attacked it, glancing the ball into the far corner of the net, sending Roma to the semi-finals and crushing Catalan hearts.

“Roma have risen from their ruins”, belted Peter Drury as the Stadio Olympico erupted.

Alongside Manchester City, Barcelona were one of the favourite to win this year’s Champions League, but we will see semi-finals featuring Liverpool and Roma instead. Football is great sometimes.
