The statement we were all waiting for

Valour FC striker William Akio has released a statement following his spectacular goal-line miss, which quickly went viral on social media.

Akio etched his name into the history of association football on Sunday afternoon, producing one of the worst misses in the history of football against Halifax Wanderers in the the Canadian Premier League.

Alessandro Riggi appeared to have toe-poked his shot past the goalkeeper and into the open net, however, his teammate Akio cleared the ball off the line as he ran to celebrate.

His miss led to many questioning why he even attempted to kick the ball into the open net, given that it was almost all the way over the goal line anyway.

Akio has since broken his silence, writing on Twitter: “I want to start off by saying I’m happy for the three points and our teams resilience last night.

“I really just missed a wide open net. It’s simple as that. Everyone makes mistakes on the job, it’s part of life. I will bounce back as I always have in life and football.”

Fortunately for Akio, who was later substituted, the miss didn’t prove too costly. Seven minutes from time, Dyer was able to score the only goal of the game, sealing the win. Akio is actually the club’s second all-time top goalscorer behind Dyer.

The pair combined for seventeen goals last season, and have produced seven goals between them in Valour’s thirteen league matches this year.
