United statement on Hillsborough chanting

In a statement released by a club spokesperson on Wednesday, United vowed that they will work to educate fans on the issue.

“Manchester United stands in solidarity with Liverpool and its fans in remembering the victims of the Hillsborough disaster,” the spokesperson said.

“Offensive chants about the tragedy are completely unacceptable and we will work with our supporters’ groups to educate fans on the issue.”

97 Liverpool supporters lost their lives in the tragedy as a result of a crush at an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest on April 15 1989. It is the worst sporting disaster to take place in the UK.

United’s condemnation of the chants comes days after Manchester City, led by Pep Guardiola, issued an apology after some of their supporters disturbed a minute’s silence to mark the 33rd anniversary of the disaster before the FA Cup final semi-final against Liverpool at Wembley.
