According to the Mirror, United are reluctant to meet Spurs' £55m asking price given that his value is set to plummet to £25m in just 6 months' time. Instead, they're poised to make a final offer of around £40m for the 29-year-old.
Should that be knocked back, the report adds that Mourinho has given the green light for the club to try and sign an alternative - most likely to be Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng, after United made contact with the German champions about a possible transfer.
