Toni Kroos struggled to hold in his laughter after Romelu Lukaku error

What was he thinking?

Romelu Lukaku didn’t have the best first half against Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

Although he found the net after the break, Manchester United’s new forward struggled against the Champions League holders during the opening 45 of the Super Cup and supporters simply could not believe one piece of decision-making from the Belgium international.

As Real midfielder Toni Kroos dawdled on the ball, he was closed down by Ander Herrera, who got a toe to the ball and sent it 20 yards up the pitch.

Herrera sprinted into space and, had Lukaku got himself into the box, the Spanish midfielder could easily have squared the ball to the big man but, instead, Lukaku latched on to it immediately, despite being clearly offside.

It was an instinctive reaction and Lukaku clearly felt that the final touch came off Kroos’ boot, rather than his teammate’s.

But the linesman’s flag went up, the chance disappeared and Kroos simply could not hide his amusement, having been left off the hook by Lukaku’s error.
