Timothy Fosu-Mensah set to go out on loan to Bundesliga side

United fans won't be best pleased by the news, as it means Matteo Darmian is likely to start the season at right-back

Manchester United are likely to let Timothy Fosu-Mensah go out on loan to Hertha Berlin for the upcoming season, according to Sky Italy.

The defender spent last season out on loan at Crystal Palace, where he proved to be very useful but failed to truly nail down a spot in the starting XI. He wasn’t helped by the fact that Roy Hodgson changed to a 4-4-2 formation when Fosu-Mensah was bought to play in a back three, but he still put in several strong performances, like when he nullified the threat of Leroy Sané against Manchester City.

During this summer’s pre-season tour of the United States, the Dutchman has been impressive for United, playing in a back three and a back four comfortably, displaying his composure on the ball and excellent 1v1 defensive ability.

But despite his good form this summer, he looks set to be loaned out once again after United signed Diogo Dalot from Porto to deputise for Antonio Valencia at right-back. There is also a long list of mediocre centre-backs for Fosu-Mensah to compete with for a spot in the back four, so his best chance of game time appears to be another season long loan move.

United fans may not be best pleased by the news, as many were hoping for the 20-year-old to be given more opportunities in the first team this season. With Antonio Valencia and Dalot both currently injured, Matteo Darmian has been playing at right-back throughout pre-season, but the Italian wants to leave and fans would rather see Fosu-Mensah start in his place.
