PSV defender Hector Moreno got it in the ear, on Tuesday night, when his sliding interception on Luke Shaw inadvertently broke the Manchester United man’s leg.
Moreno did not receive a caution and the match referee deemed his challenge fair game, waving play on.
It became immediately clear, however, that Shaw was in trouble. The Mexican’s trailing leg had thumped into Shaw’s left in, causing a double fracture.
Post-match, Moreno expressed his sorrow that Shaw would be out of action for the forthcoming months.
Last night, during ITV Sport’s coverage of the Champions League, Roy Keane was quick to defend Moreno.
‘I thought it was a brilliant challenge,’ Keane declared.
‘I love the physical side of the game. You can always tell by player reactions and none of the United lads at the time, and players are best judges because they are nearest the tackle, didn’t react over the top thinking it was a bad challenge, obviously at the end of it.
‘And when players are travelling that speed, defending like that, injuries are going to happen. I’m surprised there are not more like it. It was more of an accident at the end of with his trailing foot.’
While he was still on the clock, Keane lashed into United’s makeshift [Daley Blind as centre back] defence.
“Defensively,” he began, “I still think United are all over the place.
”The money United have invested, going forward they will be fine and in midfield they are not too bad but I think they are crying out for centre-halves, definitely one, possibly two.
“As long as Blind and even Smalling, I’m not sure about him, or either Jones are playing centre-half, particular in the Champions League against bigger teams [they will struggle].”
