Foster was the latest big name to be announced

Fans have been left confused after Ben Foster confirmed he would be playing for the World XI at this year’s Soccer Aid.

Foster was the latest high profile name to be announced and will play alongside the likes of Tommy Fury, Mo Gilligan, Usain Bolt, Maisie Adam and more.

They take on a star-studded England side which will feature Jermain Defoe, Jack Wilshire, Paul Scholes and Liam Payne who will all be managed by Chelsea women’s boss Emma Hayes.

The experienced goalkeeper has made a return to football with Wrexham, where he recently helped the Dragons win the National League and return to the Football League after a 15-year absence.

But unlike some of his World XI teammates, Foster doesn’t actually qualify for another nation.

A spokesperson for Foster has claimed that the 40-year-old is playing for the World XI solely because he wants to be involved in the event and that David James has already been selected to be England’s goalkeeper for the game.

It was believed that Foster was initially going to coach the World XI goalkeepers however that now seems to have changed and the shot-stopper will be in-between the sticks.

Speaking about his decision to play back in March, he told LiveScore: “We’re really, really excited for it. I think I’ll find it fairly easy because it’s kind of both of my worlds mixing together in a way.

“Having played football for the best part of 20 years, I’ve jumped into this new sort of YouTube world.

“I’ve already done a lot of videos where we’re sort of playing with YouTubers. Now we understand that world, it should be fairly easy for me!”

Soccer Aid takes place at Old Trafford on Sunday June 11.
