Spurs’ former manager Mourinho is set to receive a huge sum following his departure

Jose Mourinho has been sacked after 17 months of managing Tottenham Hotspur, it was announced this morning.

Mourinho became the Spurs manager in November 2019 and now leaves the team in seventh place in the Premier League.

The first-team coach Ryan Mason will manage the first team until the season ends, the Telegraph reported.

According to the Independent, the decision to sack Mourinho was taken on Friday night, after Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Everton FC.

Announcing the news in a statement, Spurs said: “The Club can today announce that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have been relieved of their duties.”

Chairman, Daniel Levy, said: “Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club. Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.”

The Independent understands that Tottenham have decided upon a severance package of around £15million with Mourinho, who is set to commence a period of gardening leave following the announcement.

The news comes after his team only won one of their last five games.
