It came after his FA Cup third round performance

A teenage boy has been arrested on suspicion of “malicious communications” after sending online abuse to Kai Havertz and his wife.

The boy, who is 17-years-old, has been bailed, say Hertfordshire Police.

The abuse came after following a match in the FA Cup third round between Arsenal and Manchester United in which United knocked out their hosts from the cup.

The German 25-year-old forward had missed a good chance to win the game in normal time and also had his penalty saved by United’s second keeper Altay Bayindir in the shootout.

United ultimately won the match 5-3 on penalties.

Havertz and his wife, Sophia, got married last year and have been together since 2018.

They are expecting a child together after Sophia announced the news in November.

In light of the messages her husband received, Sophia wrote: “For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me. I hope you are so ashamed of yourself,” she wrote as she shared one of the direct messages.

“I’m not sure what to even say but please guys, be more respectful. We are better than this.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said online abuse of players has “terrible consequences” and needs to be “eradicated from the game”.
