Spurs are about to sign a player, and one joke has been doing the rounds

Bound to happen

It took a while, but they’ve finally signed a new player.

Tottenham Hotspur are about to complete their first transfer of the current window. Spurs had been the only side in the Premier League without a new signing this summer, but that’s about to change as Davinson Sanchez is on his way.

The Colombian central defender will join from Ajax for an initial fee of £28m, with another £14m to be paid in potential add-ons. According to reports, talks between Spurs and the Dutch club reached a breakthrough on Thursday.

Sanchez told Ajax earlier this week that he wants to leave, and turned down a new deal to remain in Amsterdam. The 21-year-old only joined Ajax last summer, after rejecting Barcelona because he didn’t want to play for their B team. His arrival at Spurs will enable the club to sell Kevin Wimmer, with West Brom reportedly ready to pay £15m for the Austrian.

Sanchez could feature in a back three alongside Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, two former Ajax players.

The player’s imminent arrival has also prompted a common reaction among many Spurs fans, with Danny Rose’s recent comments being referenced. Rose spoke about potentially leaving Spurs, appearing critical of their rigid wage structure, and urged them to sign some well-known players.

“I am not saying buy ten players, I’d love to see two or three – and not players you have to Google and say, ‘Who’s that?’ I mean well-known players. Under Harry Redknapp we signed Rafa van der Vaart. It was like, ‘Wow, how did he do that?’ I mean signings like that are what we need – that’s just my opinion.”

Sanchez isn’t exactly a household name – Manchester United fans may remember him from the Europa League final back in May – but he appears capable of becoming an excellent defender.

Rose may have to Google him, as many have pointed out.
