‘I said at half-time, I’m not sure [Everton] know how to win a game lads’
Burnley manager Sean Dyche brutally summarised Everton’s current struggles in his post-match interview after the two sides met at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.
The Clarets came from behind to secure an important three points against their fellow relegation strugglers, with Maxwel Cornet scoring in the 85th minute to pile more misery on Frank Lampard and the Toffees.
Nathan Collins opened the scoring for the home side, but Everton took the lead courtesy of Richarlison’s two penalties.
However, Jay Rodriguez levelled proceedings in the 57th minute before Cornet grabbed a late winner.
The defeat means that the Toffees have lost five of their last seven games in all competitions and sit just one point ahead of 18th-placed Burnley, with the two sides having played the same amount of matches.
Speaking about the Clarets’ opponents after the match at Turf Moor, Dyche revealed that he told his players at half-time he ‘wasn’t sure Everton knew how to win a match’.

When Dyche was asked how his side ‘prayed’ on a team with a poor away record, he replied: “Sometimes the mentality is hard, every season there’s been tough matches for us and sometimes you kind of sense that a team might have lost how to win a game.
“I said to them at half-time, ‘I’m not sure these [Everton] know how to win a game lads, away from home particularly’.
“I said we’ve got to play on that, we’ve got to play on that mentality and we do it by playing forwards with better quality.”
He added: “It’s just one game you know, you’re not safe just because you win that, there’s nine more to go and the focus will be on the next one to come.”
Everton host Manchester United at Goodison Park on Saturday, while Burnley travel to Norwich City on Sunday.
