Fans think Scott McTominay should have been sent off for rash tackle during Brighton clash

Should McTominay have been sent off?

A number of people on social media believe that Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay should have been sent off for a late challenge on Brighton and Hove Albion’s Moisés Caicedo on Sunday.

The Scotland international took a heavy touch, which allowed Caicedo to close him down in the centre of the pitch. However, as McTominay attempted to win the ball back, he was late with his tackle and caught his opponent on the ankle.

Fans on social media were quick to suggest that the 25-year-old should have been shown a red card for the tackle, rather than a yellow.

One Twitter user said: “Scott Mctominay is lucky not to be sent off there for #ManUtd and reminds everyone why Neves would be a much better option.”

Another added: “Scott McTominay is a very lucky boy, should’ve been sent off for this awful tackle.”

A third said: “That is utterly horrific and Scott McTominay should be sent off.”

Another noted: “I have yet to watch a Manchester United match in which Scott McTominay should not have been sent off at some point.”

Shortly after McTominay’s challenge, Graham Potter’s side took a deserved 1-0 lead at Old Trafford through Pascal Gross. The 31-year-old slotted home from close range after some good work on the left side.

The away side double their lead in the 39th minute, with Gross grabbing his second of the game. United goalkeeper David de Gea parried a shot straight into the path of the Brighton man, who calmly converted.

At the time of writing, the Red Devils trail 2-0 against Potter’s side, with Cristiano Ronaldo – who declared he was ‘ready’ for action before the game – still on the bench.
