Scott Carson has played four Champions League games in his footballing career and is now a two-time winner of the prestigious tournament.

The veteran goalkeeper picked up his second Champions League winners’ medal, at Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, for being part of a Manchester City squad that claimed the trophy for the first time in their history.

In doing so, Carson equalled Milan legends Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta for longest time between European Cup title wins.

The Italians won with the Rossineri in 1989 and again in 2007 [picking up another three, in between]. Carson equalled that record as it is 18 years since he was part of a Liverpool squad that won the Champions League.

Although Jerzy Dudek started that Liverpool final win, over Milan and also in Istanbul, Carson was on the bench and picked up a winners’ medal.

After one fan wrote on Twitter that Carson had won two Champions League titles ‘without playing a minute,” the 37-year-old was quick to point out this wasn’t the case.

He simply replied: “90 minutes quarter final do your research lad.”

Carson played a role in Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League win by starting in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Juventus, in the quarter final first leg at Anfield.

Liverpool would draw the return leg 0-0, with Dudek in goal, beat Chelsea in the semis and Milan in the final. Carson was also on the bench when Liverpool won the Super Cup, later that year. He made two Champions League appearances the following season.

After a 2011 move to play with Bursaspor, Scott Carson would play six seasons in the Championship, with Wigan and Derby County, as he looked to be winding down his career.

Pep Guardiola signed him up, on loan, in 2019/20 then made the move permanent in 2021. Carson has only played two senior games with Manchester City, with his last appearance coming in last season’s Champions League round of 16, as he kept a clean sheet in a 5-0 win over Sporting.
