Salah has explained he was not being disrespectful in his post-match interview

Mo Salah has moved to clarify comments he made after Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Manchester United on Tuesday after some viewers mistakenly believed they were about United’s players.

Salah scored twice as Liverpool strolled to a comfortable victory over their rivals at Anfield, a result which moves them ahead of Manchester City at the Premier League summit – if only for 24 hours.

Speaking to Sky Sports after full-time, the Egyptian was asked why he thought Liverpool had been so dominant in their games against United this season.

“They make our life easier, in the midfield and in the back,” he replied. “They always give us the ball in a situation like a one-against-one.”

‘I was not talking about the Manchester United players’

Some misconstrued the comments as being about United’s porous backline, which has now shipped more goals in the league this season than relegation-threatened Burnley.

Salah explained on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon that he had not been directing the comments at United’s players and that he was referring to his teammates.

“I meant our midfield and our defence make it easy for us,” he tweeted. “I was not talking about the Manchester United players whom I respect.”

Liverpool quadruple dream still alive, United wait for end of miserable season

Liverpool’s victory turns up the heat on City in the race for the Premier League title. Should Pep Guardiola’s side win their game in hand at home to Brighton on Wednesday, they will reclaim top spot with six games to go.

Jurgen Klopp’s team have already won the League Cup earlier this season against Chelsea and are hoping to complete an unprecedented quadruple in the remainder of the season.

They will face Chelsea again in the FA Cup final next month having beaten City in the semi-final last weekend, and face Villarreal for a place in the Champions League final.

United, meanwhile, have endured a nightmare season. Few expected them to avoid defeat at Anfield, but the hapless manner in which they lost the game has seen many question how long it will be before the club is able to mount a genuine title threat.

The very fact so many people thought Salah could have been talking about United just about sums the situation at Old Trafford up.
