Rooney set for a second stint at D.C. United

Wayne Rooney is set to seal a return to management, after reportedly agreeing terms to take charge of MLS side D.C. United.

Rooney recently stepped down as manager of Derby County, who were relegated to League One. Despite their drop to the third tier of English football, the former England captain was praised for the work he did in exceptionally difficult circumstances, with the Rams struggling with serious financial problems throughout his time at the helm.

According to The Athletic, Rooney has now reached an agreement with D.C. United after being in discussions with them for several weeks.

The 36-year-old joined the MLS side as a player after his second spell with Everton, spending 18 months with the side before returning to England with Derby.

D.C. United currently sit 13th in the MLS’ Eastern Conference, having endured a miserable campaign. In their last outing, they were hammered 7-0 by Philadelphia Union.

Current head coach Chad Ashton took the reins at the club earlier this year, replacing Hernán Losada. He was expected to take charge until the end of the campaign, but this may now change with Rooney’s imminent arrival.
