Such a severe accusation was never going to go unchallenged. And Roma chairman James Pallotta has wasted no time in denying De Laurentiis’ accusation. In fact, he went full John W Henry, the Liverpool owner who responded to Arsenal’s bid for Luis Suarez in 2013 by tweeting ‘What do you think they’re smoking over there at the Emirates?’

Pallotta hit back at De Laurentiis today, saying: “‘What do you think De Laurentiis is smoking over there in Naples? If he finds that little bird again, he’ll find out we also own Barca and Bayern.”

Barcelona and Bayern are famously fan-owned clubs.

Roma’s managing director also reacted to the claims that they share the same ownership as Liverpool, with a much more measured response: “I can only guess he is listening to the wrong birds, but we wish Napoli good luck with the new season, as we do with all teams…”
