The 33-year-old has made it clear that he wishes to seek a new challenge after a glittering career with the Bundesliga giants, but Bayern are reluctant to let him leave knowing that a replacement will cost them a significant fee.

In a previous interview he said: "After this time I feel that it is time for a new stage.

"I respect FC Bayern and its rules. But changes, especially after such a time, are part of the life of the club and the player. I hope that doesn't come across as selfish.

"I have a contract, but I also tried to make it clear to the club how I feel."

Lewandowski's former agent, Mike Barthel, revealed that it was a method that the forward threatened to use when moving to his current employers from Borussia Dortmund eight years ago.

"It was already considered that he would not appear for training," Barthel told Sport Bild.

"I trust Robert not to show up for training..."

Bayern President Uli Hoeness believes that Lewandowski will remain professional - regardless of where his future may lie.

He said: "I don’t think about that at all. He has a contract, and we are a constitutional state. We have decided that we will not let him go. Unless we could have found a replacement halfway."

Bayern have made three signings this summer, bringing in Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazouri from Ajax and Sadio Mane from Liverpool.
