Relive Euro 2016 by watching this glorious animation

Why does the football have to stop?

Matt Tate

Wales surging spectacularly to the semi-final, Iceland’s awe-inspiring thunderclap, Portugal’s unfancied triumph and England generally being shit again: Euro 2016 was alright, wasn’t it?

In truth, there have been more memorable international tournaments, but one watch of Case Jernigan and New York-based studio Make Savvy’s brilliant animated short would have you thinking we’ve just witnessed one of the most spectacular sporting events in history.

Commissioned by The Guardian after the final, the video charts all of the landmark moments in an unpredictable month in France. You’ve got Dimitri Payet’s wondergoal, Hal Robson-Kanu’s even better wondergoal, Robbie Brady’s late winner against Italy, Cristiano Ronaldo, and lots of Iceland. There’s also a reminder of the hooligan scuffles that marred the opening week of the tournament.

Anyone else suffering from serious football withdrawal after that? How many days is it until the Premier League returns?
