Real Sociedad fans attack Atletico Madrid bus before Copa del Rey clash

Only Simeone would try and single-handedly take them on

Atletico Madrid’s bus was attacked by Real Sociedad fans prior to their Copa del Rey clash at the Reale Arena on Wednesday night.

Diego Simeone was caught on camera angrily gesturing from inside the team bus as hundreds of La Real supporters lined the streets and threw objects at the vehicle.

A number of windows were smashed as the hostile environment continued to intensify – but in typical fashion, the Atletico boss was quick to stand up to the Sociedad supporters.

As the Argentine moved to the front of the bus, he was met with a chorus of abuse, with a number of people swearing back towards him as objects continued to be launched towards him.

The game itself was equally as infuriating for the 51-year-old, with Atletico falling to a 2-0 defeat and exiting the Copa del Rey at the hands of Imanol Alguacil’s side.

Former Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj opened the scoring for the home side in the 33rd minute – heading home from an inviting cross.

Things went from bad to worse for the reigning La Liga champions when Alexander Sørloth made it 2-0 just after the half-time break.

Having also lost in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final first leg against Athletic Club at the weekend, Atletico have won just two of their last eight matches in all competitions.

The disappointing run of results has seen Simeone’s men drop to fourth in the La Liga table – 16 points being league-leaders and city rivals Real Madrid.

Atletico return to La Liga action at the weekend when they host Valencia at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Saturday.
