CD Tacón gained promotion to Liga Iberdrola last season

Real Madrid will have a women’s team for the first time next season after reportedly acquiring the league place of recently promoted side CD Tacón for a fee believed to be €500,000.

Based in Madrid, CD Tacón were promoted to the top flight of women’s football last season after just three seasons in Spain’s Segunda Division.

While it’s been reported that club president Florentino Perez was initially reluctant to submit a side into the women’s top flight, the enormous success of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona is believed to have swayed him.

The two sides broke a world record for attendance at a women’s league match last season when 60,739 attended their game at Atletico’s Wanda Metropolitano.

CD Tacón were only established in 2014, but found immediate success. The deal for Madrid to acquire the club’s place in the Primera Division is expected to be finalised next week.

The women’s game has grown in Spain in recent years, and last week saw a pledge of €20 million for next season from Spanish FA general secretary Andreu Camps.

Atletico Madrid won last season’s Primera Division ahead of Barcelona, who won the cup and were beaten in the Champions League final by Olympique Lyonnais.

It is believed that Madrid will retain a number of CD Tacón’s players for next season, as well as recruiting some high-profile names.
