The news in itself would not be a clear indication that interest in De Gea had been shelved, but United's Ed Woodward briefed the press this week that there was definitely no deal without Ramos.
The Old Trafford CEO told journalists that United would be prepared to let the player leave for free at the end of next season, and that now looks the most likely option.
Real's mouthpiece publication Marca also claimed a few days ago that Los Blancos would now hold on until next summer to secure the services of the star keeper.
