“This information is completely false, absurd and impossible”

Real Madrid have issued a statement denying reports that the club are exploring the idea of joining the Premier League.

Los Blancos are in the middle of a row with the bosses of La Liga over plans to sell a 10% share of the league to equity firm CVC Capital Partners, and a report in Spanish sports paper Mundo Deportivo claimed club president Florentino Perez was supposedly keen on the idea of moving the club to a foreign league, also considering Serie A and the Bundesliga.

Real Madrid’s statement reads: “Given the information published today by the newspaper Mundo Deportivo, in which it says that our club studied the possibility of moving from La Liga to the Premier, Real Madrid wants to assert that this information is completely false, absurd and impossible and it only intends to disturb, once more, the day to day of our club.”

Since this report was published on Saturday morning, La Liga president Javier Tebas has also rubbished the rumours, with a very catty tweet including a slightly strange metaphor, which you can work out for yourself. He’s basically calling it bullshit.

Maybe they’re right, maybe Real Madrid have no interest in joining a foreign league. But given their instrumental role in the European Super League fiasco, a drum they are still hopelessly banging, you can never rule it out. Florentino Perez’s selfishness should never be underestimated.
