Real Madrid’s hopes of winning the Champions League may already have ended

Wayne Farry

Real Madrid

Real Madrid are probably not a superstitious side

When you win as much as they have then superstition really means nothing. You either win or you don’t.

But with Cristiano Ronaldo now at Juventus and a replacement not yet acquired, winning the Champions League will be a lot more difficult for the La Liga giants.

That task may also have been made a touch more difficult by the fact that they have been drawn in Group G for this year’s edition of the tournament, alongside AS Roma, CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen.

Now, while those sides won’t necessarily pose a huge amount of trouble to Madrid, they still have to contend with the fact that no side has emerged from Group G to win the tournament this decade.

In fact, no side has emerged from Group G to win the Champions League since AC Milan did so during the 2002/03 season, when they defeated Serie A rivals Juventus at Old Trafford.

Will Madrid be the ones to end this curse and stride victorious into the sunset? Perhaps, or perhaps the curse will rage on for centuries, only to be broken when a true hero comes along, with the strength to carry on etc.
