Graham Potter for England?

England’s draw with Germany on Tuesday night seemed to annoy some Three Lions fans, with many suggesting that Graham Potter should replace Gareth Southgate as manager.

The Three Lions came from behind to draw 1-1 against Hansi Flick’s side in the Nations League, with Harry Kane’s late penalty – his 50th goal for England – cancelling out Jonas Hofmann’s second-half strike.

It came after Southgate’s side fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Hungary last week, which was their first loss in 90 minutes since 2020.

During the clash against Germany in Munich, and in the immediate aftermath, Brighton and Hove Albion manager Potter’s name began to circulate on Twitter, with several England supporters calling for the 47-year-old to replace Southgate – despite the Three Lions boss leading England to the 2018 World Cup semi-final and the final of the European Championships last summer.

How did social media react?

One fan wrote: “Go and get Graham Potter to manage this England team. This Southgate has got no clue!”

Another added: “We need Graham Potter in charge of England or even Poch we CANNOT go into the World Cup with Southgate in charge. #SouthgateOut.”

A third user wrote: “It’s unrealistic but I would like Graham Potter after the World Cup to be honest.”

Another supporter said: “Southgate ball is so dull. Crop of players we have would be utilised so much better by someone like Graham Potter.”

A fifth stated: “No joke, Graham Potter doing way more with this English team than Southgate”.

A sixth person added: “Graham Potter would do wonders with this England side”.

Despite picking up just one point from their opening two Nations League matches, England have enjoyed success under Southgate. The 51-year-old led the Three Lions to the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time since 1990 under Sir Bobby Robson – the first in any major tournament since the Euro 96 – and came closer than any manager since Sir Alf Ramsey to winning England’s second major trophy after the shoot-out loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final.
