Pogba Leaves Monaco After Contract Terminated a Year Early

Paul Pogba has left Monaco after one season, with the Ligue 1 club terminating a contract that ran until June 2027. Monaco said the deal had been ended early because objectives set by both parties had only been "partially achieved", according to BBC Sport. The 33-year-old France midfielder played six matches for the club, five of them as a substitute.

It is an abrupt end to a comeback that had been years in the making. Pogba joined Monaco last summer after being cleared to return from a doping suspension picked up at Juventus — a four-year ban the Court of Arbitration for Sport cut to 18 months, allowing him back in March 2025. The 2018 World Cup winner never established himself in the side, and his exit arrives in the middle of a restless summer transfer window.

Representing this club and the principality was an incredible experience. AS Monaco is an incredible club and although I did not play as many games as I had hoped, I will always be grateful for the opportunity to wear their colours.

Monaco chief executive Thiago Scuro framed the signing as a gamble worth taking. "When [Pogba] joined, we explained that this was a major challenge, that was audacious and ambitious," he said. "While the outcome is not what we had hoped for, it should not overshadow the enthusiasm that surrounded his return to club football."

Where next for Pogba?

BBC Sport understands Pogba is attracting interest from Major League Soccer, where he has previously been linked with DC United and Inter Miami and where European names keep landing in MLS. Any move may have to wait: he sustained a hamstring injury at Monaco's pre-season training camp in England last week.
