United have named their 25-man Champions League squad

Manchester United have confirmed that Phil Jones, Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo will not be included in their squad for the Champions League group stages, which commence later this month.

In their place, United have added their trio of new signings Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles and Facundo Pellistri to the 25-man squad.

United youngsters Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams and highly rated defender Teden Mengi have been placed on the ‘B list’, but are still eligible for selection in the competition.

Jones’ continuing injury woes perhaps explain his omission, while Argentine duo Rojo and Romero have both been linked with moves away from the club.

Though the close of the transfer window poses a problem in finding new clubs for players, Romero is reportedly eyeing a move to Major League Soccer after his deadline day move to Everton fell through. MLS clubs are permitted to sign new players until October 29.

United have been drawn in a difficult group for their return to Europe’s elite cup competition. To reach the knockout stages they will have to negotiate their way out of a group including last year’s beaten finalists Paris Saint-Germain, semi-finalists RB Leipzig and İstanbul Başakşehir.
