‘The strangest thing about the last seven years was that they were not there’

Pep Guardiola gave his honest answer on BT Sports when asked if Manchester United are involved in this year’s title race with Man City and Arsenal.

Before City kicked off their game against Newcastle, the Spaniard took time to chat with Rio Ferdinand, Rafael Benitez, and Joleon Lescott.

Man United won the Carabao Cup against Newcastle last Sunday, and their Premier League form has been good, sitting nicely in third place, 11 points off the top, but with a game in hand.

They play Liverpool on Sunday evening, and then have a string of games that could have a big impact on the title race, and maybe even thrust themselves back into it.

A giddy Ferdinand couldn’t resist asking Guardiola the question.

“One of the biggest questions we have is – how do you feel that it is a three-horse race now with Manchester United back in the game?” asked a laughing Ferdinand.

Guardiola United“Yeah they are back, they are back. Sooner or later it should happen, sooner or later.”

“Do you see it as a three-horse race now?” asked presenter Lynsey Hipgrave.

“I said two or three months ago that Manchester is back. The body language, how they celebrate the goals, before in the past it was not like that.

“You felt it, you feel it. It is United, come on, they should be back. The strangest thing about seven years was that they were not there.

“That was a really big surprise for me when I arrived seven years ago.”

With a cup already in the cabinet, a Champions League place pretty much secured and an emphatic victory over Barcelona, Erik ten Hag certainly seems to have his team heading in the right direction.
