Paul Scholes would definitely approve of this golazo from Portugal’s U21s

What a hit

It would be unfair to suggest that Paul Scholes was the only player in history to score a volley from outside the box.

But he definitely perfected it.

Nobody was able to control a dropping ball better than the legendary Manchester United midfielder and his efforts against Bradford and Aston Villa are so iconic that we don’t even have to bother showing them to you.

But we will.

It’s one of the more difficult techniques in football and so many players attempting to emulate Scholes’ magic balls it right up.

Either they lean back and blaze the ball over the bar or they fail to get the requisite contact and scuff the ball into the turf.

Well Portugal U21 midfielder Bruno Fernandes made no such mistake as he scored a winner against Germany on Tuesday that Scholes would have been proud to call his own.

Just like Scholesy and teammate David Beckham managed against Bradford in 2000, Fernandes connected first-time with a corner delivery and smashed it past a crowd of players, into the corner.

Pick that one out!
