Özil’s time at Fenerbahce has come to an end

Mesut Özil’s contract at Fenerbahce has been terminated after the midfielder was frozen out of the first-team, according to reports.

The former Arsenal star has not played for the Turkish side since March after he was excluded from the squad following a row over his fitness.

Although his bust-up came with interim boss Ismail Kartal, there has still been no way back for him under new manager Jorge Jesus, who has left him out his squad.

As reported by NTVSpor, the German has not been ‘pardoned’ after his issues last season, and he is now set to leave the club. However, the same publication claim that his departure is by mutual agreement.

Özil made 36 appearances for Fenerbahce, scoring nine goals and grabbing three assists.

Former Arsenal star forced to train alone after being outcasted

The 33-year-old, who signed for Fenerbahce from the Gunners in January 2021, has endured an underwhelming time in Turkey, which resulted in him training alone after being ostracised from the group.

While Özil has previously insisted that he was keen to still ‘contribute’ to the Turkish club, he has unfollowed them on social media as he prepares to find a new side.

Fenerbahce manager Jesus revealed that he would not play for the team again, saying: “He had his time, his space. He has a beautiful history in Turkey, no one can take it away from him.

“He is a well-known player around the world. But I will follow exactly what was the end of the Özil era. The most important thing here is Fenerbahce and it is from there that I build my ideas and the players who come to work with me.”

Reports are indicating that the attacking midfielder is attracting interest from Turkish outfit Medipol Basaksehir.
