Only one Manchester United player made it into the EFL Cup team of the tournament

Two Liverpool players made the cut.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic can feel pretty hard done by that he couldn’t find a place in the best XI of the EFL Cup.

He only won the bloody tournament for Manchester United.

Ibrahimovic finished the EFL Cup with four goals to his name, two of which came in the final, and an assist to boot.

It was the United centre-forward’s goal at the death of Sunday’s final against Southampton that sent the league cup back to Old Trafford.

But Ibrahimovic couldn’t find a place in the forward line of the team of the tournament, as Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge and Tammy Abraham of Bristol City, who made it to the fourth round, beat him out up front.

Only one player from the champions actually made the cut and that came in the form of United midfielder Ander Herrera.

Two players from beaten finalists, Southampton, were named in Maya Yoshida and Sofiane Boufal while Saints boss Claude Puel was selected as the hypothetical manager of the side.

To be fair, the selection was made prior to kick-off at Wembley on Sunday but that brings about an even more pressing question… Why the hell wouldn’t they wait until the champions had been crowned before picking the team of the tournament.

The distinct lack of Ibrahimovic certainly concerned this bunch.
