Nobody was more shocked by Deontay Wilder’s TKO than the ring girls

A picture paints a thousand words

Deontay Wilder left a lasting impact on the ring girls last weekend.

Ahead of the defence of his WBC heavyweight title on Saturday night, Wilder accidentally scared the living daylights out of one of the ring girls at the weigh-in ceremony when he unleashed his trademark battle cry.

She clearly saw the funny side of it as she laughed at her own jumpiness while Wilder and opponent Luis Ortiz squared off for the cameras.

Well if there was laughter on Friday evening, it was replaced by absolute shock 24 hours later as ‘The Bronze Bomber’ and Ortiz engaged in an incredible battle, with both rocked at stages following an early feeling-out process.

Wilder was hurt badly for the first time in his professional career in the seventh round but rallied, wisely taking the eighth off before he came out reinvigorated in the ninth frame.

Come the 10th round, the snap was back in Wilder’s punches and he let fly with his signature wild offence, forcing the stoppage against a visibly fatigued Ortiz.

That’s 39 knockouts in 40 victories for Wilder and nobody was more blown away by it than the ring girls, who couldn’t hide their emotions ringside.

Both were left with mouths agape as referee David Fields waved the fight off.

Wilder’s style might not be conventional but the results of a near-100 per cent knockout rate speak for themselves.

“There is no man that has stood in front of me that I haven’t knocked out and I’m gonna continue my knockout spree,” said Wilder in the wake of his most recent win.
