Porto players in tears as Nanu left unconscious after sickening clash with goalkeeper

The defender was treated on the field before being taken to hospital

Porto players were seen in tears after defender Nanu was left unconscious following a collision with Belenenses goalkeeper Stanislav Kritsyuk during a Primeira League game  on Thursday night. The 26-year-old landed on his head after the collision, with players from both sides instantly showing concern for his wellbeing and calling for medical assistance. An ambulance quickly arrived on to the pitch with the game stopped for over ten minutes as he received treatment. Members of both teams were visibly upset, with several - including former Real Madrid defender, Pepe - seen crying and praying as Nanu lay on the ground. Pepe later told reporters that medical staff had reassured him that his teammate had regained consciousness. "I wish our team-mate Nanu a speedy recovery," the veteran defender said. "The doctors in the ambulance told me that he was doing well, that he was already conscious." Nanu was eventually taken to the Sao Francisco Xavier Hospital in Lisbon for further treatment with Porto later providing an update on his condition. 'Nanu had a cerebral concussion and spinal cord injury with loss of memory. At this moment he is stable, conscious and is already oriented in time and space. 'The examinations performed at Hospital S. Francisco Xavier did not reveal any alterations of clinical severity. He will continue to be observed at the hospital.'
