Literally the most Serie A transfer of all time, this

Roma midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan is set to join Inter Milan on a free transfer after rejecting Roma’s final contract extension offer.

The 33-year-old, who joined Roma on loan from Arsenal in September 2019 before signing on free a year later, has registered 29 goals and 28 assists in 117 appearances during his time at the Stadio Olimpico.

Inter Milan set to sign Mkhitaryan

However, it appears that Jose Mourinho’s side are now set to lose Mkhitaryan in the same way they won him, with reports suggesting that he will sign a contract with Inter until 2024 in the coming days.

As per Fabrizio Romano, the former Manchester United man will ‘replace’ Arturo Vidal, who is set to leave the club.

Football Italia previously reported that Roma had offered Mkhitaryan a salary worth in the region of €4.2m per year before add-ons and bonuses.

However, it added that the Giallorossi gave the player just 24 hours in which to make his decision, with the Armenian later informing Roma that he would not extend his contract.

Mkhi’s impressive season

Mkhitaryan enjoyed a successful 2021/22 campaign, grabbing five goals and nine assists in all competitions to help Roma to Europa Conference League glory last month.

Despite securing a first European trophy in their history, the Serie A outfit only managed to secure Europa League qualification next season, while Inter could offer Champions League football to Mkhitaryan.

The midfielder has not featured in the Champions League since 2017/18, when he played four times for Mourinho’s Man United side.

Inter missed out on the Serie A trophy by two points to rivals AC Milan last month, so a move for Mkhitaryan would strengthen their hopes of regaining the title next campaign.
