MVG woke up and chose violence

Darts star Michael van Gerwen has mocked Manchester United by joking that he wouldn’t sign for the Red Devils because they aren’t in the Champions League.

The Dutchman, who has won 39 major titles during his career, became the latest sporting icon to poke fun at United – even if he was only messing about.

Following Erik ten Hag’s arrival as the Red Devils’ new manager, United have been linked with a number of players. Several lists of transfer targets appear on social media nearly everyday, but Old Trafford is yet to welcome any new faces.

United are heavily interested in Barcelona and Netherlands midfielder Frenkie De Jong, however, his fellow Dutchman Van Gerwen will *not* be signing a deal with the club.

Paddy Power posted a tweet on Wednesday, which read: “BREAKING: Man Utd’s list of summer transfer targets has been leaked. The leaks confirm the club are interested in signing Frenkie De Jong, Antony, Jurrien Timber, Lisandro Martinez, Jari Litmanen, Wesley Sneijder, Michael Van Gerwen and Tiesto.”

Then, in a remarkable turn of events, Van Gerwen quote-tweeted the post on Thursday afternoon, announcing – yes, we all know that he was joking – that he would not sign for United because he’s a ‘Champions League player’ and, evidently, the Reds Devils aren’t currently a Champions League club.

‘Mighty Mike’ said: “I’m a Champions League player I’m not dropping down”, along with a tongue-out emoji.

It comes after reports that former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen became the latest player to reject a move to Old Trafford.

Eriksen rejects United

The Denmark international is technically a free agent after his six-month deal at Brentford ended at the end of the 21/22 season. And while the 30-year-old has received an offer to extend his contract, he is considering his options elsewhere.

Eriksen’s return to football saw him look back to his very best, putting several clubs on red alert. The midfielder is also keen to play Champions League football once again – something United obviously can’t offer.

But that hasn’t stopped them trying, however according to The Guardianthe midfielder has turned down United’s advances in favour of a return to Tottenham Hotspur.
