The Arsenal player angered many German fans after he met with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently, and it is understood that the fallout has been so bad that he may never be selected to represent Germany again.

The 29-year-old has been a key part of three Germany World Cup squads, in 2010, 2014 an 2018. They won the competition in 2014 but suffered a humiliating group stage exit this time around.

Özil came under immense criticism after Germany failed to beat Mexico and South Korea, but his manager defended his playmaker. However, creating chances may not be enough to rebuild the bridges that have been burned amidst the fallout over his meeting with the autocratic leader of Turkey.
