English rugby star poses for rival supporter’s photo despite awful facial injury

Holy Christ!

Patrick McCarry

Matt Banahan is one of rugby’s good guys.

The England international, like the rest of his Bath teammates, endured a rough night at Franklin’s Gardens as his side were well beaten by Northampton Saints.

Bath had a grim time of it against Saints and although statistics will never tell you the full story, Toby Faletau’s 32 metres gained was the best Todd Blackadder’s side could muster. On the opposite side, George North looked dangerous and David Ribbans grabbed two tries.

Banahan often plays centre but was out on the left wing for the tie and did not see too much of the ball. He had seven possessions and his three carries gained 17 metres. That was it in attack but he was kept occupied in defence.

One collision, around the hour mark, resulted in the 30-year-old receiving a nasty gash across his face and left eye. Banahan ent off for treatment but returned to see out the 24-6 loss.

Following the game, as he so often does, the Jersey native was only too happy to stick around for autographs and snaps with fans. Saints supporter Ewan Martin shared this excellent picture following the game:

If that snap of Banahan does not look too bad, check out how he looked when he woke up this morning.

His poor son didn’t know what to make of it.

That will require some time before it heals properly.

Fair play to the England star, though, for putting the pain of his injury, and defeat, to one side after the game.

Class act.
