Mason Greenwood has officially requested to switch international allegiance from England to Jamaica, the English FA have confirmed.
The former Manchester United forward, who is currently playing for Marseille, has made a formal request to switch, which means he is no longer eligible to represent England, the country of his birth.
The new England manager Thomas Tuchel will name his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia next week. Greenwood, however, will not be part of the squad.
"My understanding is he (Greenwood) has asked to switch," FA chief executive Mark Bullingham told reporters on Thursday.
"That’s happened formally, so he wouldn’t be able to (be selected) because you can only switch once."
Greenwood is eligible to switch international allegiance because he was under 21 when he made his only appearance for England.
He is eligible to represent Jamaica through his father, who was born in the Caribbean country.
Steve McClaren, the former Man United coach, is currently the manager of Jamaica.
Greenwood, 23, has been in excellent form for Marseille this season. The forward has scored 16 goals in 26 games for the French side this season.
Greenwood has not played a game in English football since January 2022, when he was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.
He was later charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Greenwood denied the charges against him. All charges against him were dropped in February 2023.
The forward went on loan to Spanish team Getafe for the 2023/24 season, before joining Marseille on a permanent deal for €31.6m.
