Ander Herrera mocks Marcos Rojo for fire extinguisher incident

Simon Lloyd

He’s probably not going to see the funny side to this

It was a rough night for Marcos Rojo and his Boca Juniors teammates on Tuesday.

Having fallen victims to a perceived VAR injustice – their second of the tie – against Atletico Mineiro, they then suffered the agony of a penalty shootout defeat to the Brazilian club, dumping them out of this year’s Copa Libertadores.

It’s safe to say they didn’t take it particularly well, either.

Footage of Boca’s players attempting to barge their way into Atletico’s dressing room – where the match officials had taken refuge – after full-time has been shared high and wide on social media in the time since. Footage of them scrapping with police, who reportedly used pepper spray in an attempt to break up the trouble, has also done the rounds.

Through it all, the role played by Rojo has generated plenty of headlines.

The former Manchester United defender was seen arming himself with a fire extinguisher as things turned ugly in the players’ tunnel after the game. The clip doesn’t show what happened next, but it’s clear the defender does not hang the extinguisher back in its place when one of Boca’s officials attempts to calm the rapidly escalating situation.

His decision to pick up the extinguisher has amused plenty on social media, including his former United teammate, Ander Herrera.

An image of the pair was posted to Herrera’s Instagram Stories. In it, he’d added a fire extinguisher along with a laughing face emoji. He’d also tagged Rojo, too.

Not really sure Marcos will be in the right frame of mind to see the funny side of this just yet, Ander.
