The club released a statement on social media.

Manchester United have released an update on their former manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s condition following his hospitalisation at the weekend.

In a statement release on Twitter, the club wrote: “Sir Alex no longer needs intensive care and will continue rehabilitation as an inpatient.

“His family have been overwhelmed by the level of support and good wishes but continue to request privacy as this will be vital during this next stage of recovery.”

It comes after current manager Jose Mourinho admitted earlier today that United were “very, very positive” that Ferguson would recover. “We are confident,” he said.

The statement follows news on Saturday that the 76-year-old had been admitted to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery following a brain haemorrhage.

“The procedure has gone very well,” the club stated at the time, “but he needs a period of intensive care to aid his recovery. His family request privacy in this matter.”

Sir Alex retired as United manager in May 2013 having won 38 trophies during 26 years at the helm of the club.
