Herrera's United contract was set to expire last summer but the Spain international's single-season extension option was activated by the club's Executive Vice-Chairman, Ed Woodward.
Recent negotiations have not gone well, however, and the 29-year-old is said to have been unhappy with the terms named in an offer of a new long-term deal.
Herrera was named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year after the 2016/17 season and is the only player other than David De Gea to earn that honour since 2013.Explore more on these topics:
