With a name like that he must be good

It’s not uncommon for a footballer to be graced with the name of a great from years gone by. But for Benfica wonderkid Ronaldo Camara, he’s lucky enough to not only have the name of Cristiano Ronaldo and Brazilian Ronaldo, but also the inimitable Henri Camara.

For reasons other than his name, most notably his skill, Camara has found himself at the centre of a transfer battle being waged by Manchester United, Manchester City and Barcelona.

The 16-year-old attacking midfielder has reportedly been scouted by United and Barcelona for a number of years, but according to the Evening Standard, Manchester City have now entered the race to bring him to their academy.

It’s understood that City believe the allure of their academy, which in recent years has produced Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho, Brahim Diaz and Rabbi Matondo.

Whether City see him as a future first team regular or, like Sancho, Diaz and Matondo, merely an asset they can improve and sell on for a huge profit, remains to be seen.

Camara signed professional terms with Benfica in January, with a contract that runs until 2022, and has made five appearances for Portugal’s under-17 side.
