‘I think everyone’s been impressed with the way he’s come in’
Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister believes that Casemiro would be a better option to captain the club instead of Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes came in for heavy criticism after United’s heavy 7-0 defeat against Liverpool on Sunday, with many questioning his attitude on the pitch.
Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Roy Keane in particular gave a scathing assessment of the midfielder.
“Bruno Fernandes can wind you up sometimes because of the way he is, but that was appalling in the second half,” said Neville.
Keane added: “Fernandes’ body language today was nothing short of disgraceful. A really talented boy, he’s your captain, but his body language, waving his arms, not running back, you wouldn’t be happy with him in your dressing room.”
While it remains unlikely that Fernandes will be stripped of the armband, United legend Pallister thinks that his midfield counterpart should become captain instead.
Speaking to Bettingsites.co.uk, he said: “I think Casemiro is a captain in waiting. I think everyone’s been impressed with the way he’s come in with the winning mentality that he’s brought from Real Madrid.
“I don’t think they’ve had leaders recently. When I was at the club we were fortunate to have the likes of Steve Bruce, Bryan Robson and Roy Keane and Paul Ince. These guys were warriors on a football pitch.
“Bruno is different to that, as is Harry Maguire. I don’t think they’ve got that warrior mentality.”
United are preparing to move on from their weekend disappointment in the Europa League as they host LaLiga side Real Betis at Old Trafford in the round of 16.
Erik ten Hag’s side beat Barcelona in the previous round to set up another tie with Spanish opposition.
