Manchester United fans fight each other in the stands during Brighton defeat

Daniel Brown

A bad day for Man United, on and off the pitch

Manchester United fans fought each other in the stands at Old Trafford on Sunday as the Red Devils lost their opening match of the season to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Erik ten Hag’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat against the Seagulls in their Premier League opener, with Pascal Gross grabbing a brace for Graham Potter’s men.

As well as United’s underwhelming performance on the pitch, things boiled over in the stands during the match, too. Supporters in the home end could be seen fighting with each other, with footage shared on social media.

Video footage shows fans clashing in the South Stand, with fellow supporters watching on in horror. Two people got into an altercation before a third person appeared to diffuse the situation by separating the two spectators.

Several other supporters then joined in the attempt to separate the fans, and it seems as though no punches were thrown during the incident.

Ten Hag suffers defeat in opening match

Brighton scored twice in nine minutes before the break to give them a 2-0 lead at half-time. The Red Devils did manage to pull a goal back in the second period through Alexis Mac Allister’s unfortunate own goal but were unable to find an equaliser.

Cristiano Ronaldo – who started the game on the bench – was praised by Ten Hag after the match but the Dutchman admitted that he was “totally not satisfied” by what he saw from his side against the Seagulls.

The Red Devils will look to secure their first points of the new season when they travel to London to face Brentford next weekend.
