Man City ‘snub losers medals’ after Community Shield loss to Liverpool

Simon Lloyd

It’s almost as if Community Shield losers’ medals mean absolutely nothing

Manchester City’s players reportedly chose not to collect their losers’ medals after their defeat to Liverpool in the Community Shield on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s side went down 3-1 at the King Power Stadium, with Liverpool deservedly beating the Premier League champions.

Trent Alexander-Arnold had curled in a first-half opener for the Reds, only for Julian Alvarez to equalise for City (after a lengthy VAR check) with 20 minutes to go.

This, however, was as good as it got for City.

Darwin Nunez caused problems when introduced as a sub, and won Liverpool a penalty when he headed the ball against Ruben Dias’ arm with ten minutes to go.

Salah converted the penalty before Nunez got a goal for himself with his stooping header.

A stunning close-range miss from Erling Haaland at the very end of stoppage time capped a miserable afternoon for City.

According to ITV Sport’s Mark Pougatch, losers’ medals had been laid out for City at the end of the game. None of the players chose to collect the medals, however, with Pep Guardiola’s side clearly not keen to stick around for Liverpool’s celebrations.

City will now prepare for the start of the new Premier League campaign, where they travel to West Ham next week.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will also be in London to take on newly promoted Fulham.

UPDATE: Since this article was published, Pep Guardiola has denied claims that City’s players snubbed the medals, telling ITV that the players had the medals with them in the dressing room after the game.
